Calm is an innovative feeding system for mothers who wish to feed their babies with breast milk. The Calm Feeding Bottle maintains the natural feeding behavior, so that your baby: "Works" just as it would on the chest: suckling the baby creates a vacuum for milk to flow, thereby training the facial muscles. It sucks, swallows, pauses and breathes according to your natural and individual eating rhythm. You can combine breast and bottle feeding and, most importantly, you can resume breastfeeding at any time. It benefits from the nutritional substances and vitamins that breast milk offers. You continue to enjoy the love and intimacy your mother offers you during breastfeeding. Why calm down? Breastfeeding is best for your baby, but it may not always be close to breastfeeding naturally. So at Medela, we researched until we found the solution that best suits you and your baby. The research, in collaboration with the University of Western Australia, has given rise to a solution that mimics the baby's natural sucking behavior to ease the transition from breast to bottle and, most importantly, to resume breastfeeding. The result is Calm. Once the extractor has been chosen and the milk expressed, Calm is the best option to feed your baby. With Calm you can be calm because your baby feeds breast milk through the bottle as you have learned by doing it in the chest. So your baby continues to drink breast milk when you are not around and when you return you may continue to breastfeed. Feeding - Tips and Recommendations At first, it is normal for the baby to be a little reticent when presented with Calma; This may be the first time the baby comes into contact with anything other than the mother's breast. Although Calma seems perfectly normal to us, it doesn't smell, taste or look like a mother's breast. Therefore, you may need some patience until your baby accepts Calm. Here are some tips and recommendations developed with the support of new moms and experienced moms. These are tricks that will help your baby get used to Calma if it is a little hesitant at first. Let another adult (other than the mother) take care of the first feeding with Calm. Also, hold the baby in a different position from the one you adopt when breastfeeding. This helps the baby learn a new way of feeding and facilitates the transition from breastfeeding to Calm and the return to breastfeeding. Dip the tip of the Calma silicone piece into the extracted breast milk before starting to feed. Place the Calm at an angle of about 45 degrees to the baby's lower lip. To encourage your baby to open her mouth and accept Calm, stimulate her lip just as you would if you were breastfeeding. When your baby opens his mouth, put Calm on the tip of his tongue. Do not force Calm into the mouth. The baby will hold Calm as much as it needs to; just as you learned to do with the breast nipple. Throughout the feeding process, keep Calma in the position your baby has chosen. To make it easier for milk to come out, your baby will need to create a vacuum, just like breastfeeding. Pushing or pulling Calm will only stop this process. And it may also cause the baby to choke. Don't give up on Calm: It may take three or more separate attempts for your baby to learn to use Calm. If your baby has already used another teat, remember that Calma works the other way. With Calma, milk flow is controlled by the interaction between baby's sucking behavior and Calma's milk flow control system. This system is not like other conventional teats - you may need a little patience.
